MN6 — The Discourse on Aspiration
Thus have I heard: At one time the Blessed One was staying at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.
There the Blessed One addressed the disciples:
Disciples.
Venerable Sir, those disciples replied to the Blessed One.
The Blessed One said this:
Disciples, live with virtue, accomplished in the monastic code; live restrained by the restraint of the monastic code, accomplished in conduct and resort, seeing danger in the slightest faults; having undertaken the training rules, train in them.
If a disciple should wish
to know a mind with lust as a mind with lust,
to know a mind without lust as a mind without lust;
to know a mind with hatred as a mind with hatred,
to know a mind without hatred as a mind without hatred;
to know a mind with delusion as a mind with delusion,
to know a mind without delusion as a mind without delusion;
to know a contracted mind as a contracted mind,
to know a distracted mind as a distracted mind;
to know an exalted mind as an exalted mind,
to know an unexalted mind as an unexalted mind;
to know a surpassed mind as a surpassed mind,
to know an unsurpassed mind as an unsurpassed mind;
to know a concentrated mind as a concentrated mind,
to know an unconcentrated mind as an unconcentrated mind;
to know a liberated mind as a liberated mind,
to know an unliberated mind as an unliberated mind,
let him be one who fulfills virtue ... and cultivates empty places.
If a disciple should wish let him be one who fulfills virtue ... and cultivates empty places.
If a disciple should wish let him be one who fulfills virtue, devoted to internal tranquility of mind, not neglecting jhāna, possessing insight, and cultivating empty places.
If a disciple should wish to be one who fulfills moral conduct, who is devoted to internal mental calm, who is not devoid of concentration, who possesses insight, and who cultivates empty places.
Disciples, dwell having accomplished moral conduct, having accomplished the Pātimokkha; dwell restrained by the restraint of the Pātimokkha, accomplished in conduct and resort, seeing danger in the slightest faults; having undertaken, train in the training rules.
Thus, what was said was spoken with reference to this.
The Blessed One said this.
Those disciples were delighted and approved of the Blessed One's words.
