SN4.12 — The Lion's Roar Discourse
At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.
At that time, the Blessed One was surrounded by a large assembly, teaching the Dhamma.
Then it occurred to Māra the Evil One, This ascetic Gotama is surrounded by a large assembly, teaching the Dhamma. Let me approach the ascetic Gotama to create confusion.
Then Māra the Evil One approached the Blessed One and addressed him in verse:
Why do you roar like a lion,
Confident in the assembly?
Do you have a rival,
Do you think you are victorious?
The great heroes do roar,
Confident in the assemblies;
The Tathāgatas have attained strength,
Having crossed over the world's attachment.
Then Māra the Evil One, realizing The Blessed One knows me, the Well-Gone One knows me, sorrowful and dejected, vanished right there.
