SN46.24 — Discourse on Unwise Attention

Disciples, when one does not wisely attend, unarisen sensual desire arises, and arisen sensual desire increases and expands; unarisen ill will arises, and arisen ill will increases and expands; unarisen sloth and torpor arise, and arisen sloth and torpor increase and expand; unarisen restlessness and remorse arise, and arisen restlessness and remorse increase and expand; unarisen doubt arises, and arisen doubt increases and expands; the unarisen mindfulness enlightenment factor does not arise, and the arisen mindfulness enlightenment factor ceases... the unarisen equanimity enlightenment factor does not arise, and the arisen equanimity enlightenment factor ceases.

However when one wisely attends, unarisen sensual desire does not arise, and arisen sensual desire is abandoned; unarisen ill will does not arise, and arisen ill will is abandoned; unarisen sloth and torpor do not arise, and arisen sloth and torpor are abandoned; unarisen restlessness and remorse do not arise, and arisen restlessness and remorse are abandoned; unarisen doubt does not arise, and arisen doubt is abandoned. The unarisen mindfulness enlightenment factor arises, and the arisen mindfulness enlightenment factor comes to fulfillment by development... the unarisen equanimity enlightenment factor arises, and the arisen equanimity enlightenment factor comes to fulfillment by development.
