SN46.41 — The Discourse on the Threefold Abandonment

Originating in Sāvatthi.

Disciples, whoever in the past, whether ascetics or brahmins, abandoned the threefold, all of them did so because they had developed and cultivated the seven factors of enlightenment. Whoever in the future, whether ascetics or brahmins, will abandon the threefold, all of them will do so because they will have developed and cultivated the seven factors of enlightenment. Whoever at present, whether ascetics or brahmins, abandon the threefold, all of them do so because they have developed and cultivated the seven factors of enlightenment.

What are these seven factors of enlightenment? The enlightenment factor of mindfulness... up to... the enlightenment factor of equanimity.

Disciples, whoever in the past, whether ascetics or brahmins, abandoned the threefold... will abandon... abandon, all of them did so because they had developed and cultivated these very seven factors of enlightenment.
