SN48.37 — Dutiyavibhaṅgasutta

Disciples, there are these five faculties.

What five?

The faculty of pleasure, the faculty of pain, the faculty of joy, the faculty of displeasure, the faculty of equanimity.

And what is the faculty of pleasure?

Whatever bodily pleasure, bodily comfort, pleasure and comfort born of bodily contact: this is called the faculty of pleasure.

And what is the faculty of pain?

Whatever bodily pain, bodily discomfort, pain and discomfort born of bodily contact: this is called the faculty of pain.

And what is the faculty of joy?

Whatever mental pleasure, mental comfort, pleasure and comfort born of mental contact: this is called the faculty of joy.

And what is the faculty of displeasure?

Whatever mental pain, mental discomfort, pain and discomfort born of mental contact: this is called the faculty of displeasure.

And what is the faculty of equanimity?

Whatever is neither pleasant nor unpleasant, whether bodily or mental:

this is called the faculty of equanimity.

Therein whatever is the faculty of pleasure and the faculty of joy, that feeling should be seen as pleasant.

Therein whatever is the faculty of pain and the faculty of displeasure, that feeling should be seen as painful.

Therein whatever is the faculty of equanimity, that feeling should be seen as neither painful nor pleasant.

These are the five faculties.
