SN48.9 — The First Analysis Discourse

Disciples, there are these five faculties.

What are the five?

The faculty of faith, the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of wisdom.

And what, disciples, is the faculty of faith?

Here, disciples, a noble disciple is faithful, they have faith in the enlightenment of the Blessed One: Indeed, the Blessed One is an arahant, perfectly enlightened, accomplished in true knowing and conduct, well-gone, knower of the worlds, incomparable leader of persons to be tamed, teacher of gods and humans, enlightened, blessed. This is called the faculty of faith.

And what, disciples, is the faculty of energy?

Here, disciples, a noble disciple, with energized effort, dwells committed to the relinquishment of unwholesome states and attainment of wholesome states, strong, unwavering in the pursuit of the wholesome. This is called the faculty of energy.

And what, disciples, is the faculty of mindfulness?

Here, disciples, a noble disciple is mindful, endowed with perfect recollection and mindfulness, recalling and remembering what was done long ago and said long ago. This is called the faculty of mindfulness.

And what, disciples, is the faculty of concentration?

Here, disciples, a noble disciple, having developed relinquishment, gains concentration and acquires one-pointedness of mind. This is called the faculty of concentration.

And what, disciples, is the faculty of wisdom?

Here, disciples, a noble disciple is wise, endowed with wisdom that sees the arising and passing away of phenomena, noble and penetrating, leading to the complete destruction of suffering. This is called the faculty of wisdom.
