SN51.13 — The Discourse on the Concentration of Desire

Disciples, if a disciple, relying on desire, attains concentration, attains one-pointedness of mind: this is called the concentration of desire.

He generates desire, makes an effort, arouses energy, applies his mind, and strives for the non-arising of unwholesome, unskillful states that have not yet arisen.

He generates desire, makes an effort, arouses energy, applies his mind, and strives for the abandoning of unwholesome, unskillful states that have arisen.

He generates desire, makes an effort, arouses energy, applies his mind, and strives for the arising of wholesome, skillful states that have not yet arisen.

He generates desire, makes an effort, arouses energy, applies his mind, and strives for the maintenance, non-confusion, increase, growth, development, and fulfillment by development of wholesome, skillful states that have arisen.

These are called the factors of striving.

Thus, this desire, this concentration of desire, and these factors of striving:

this is called the basis of spiritual power endowed with the concentration of desire and the factors of striving.

Disciples, if a disciple, relying on energy, attains concentration, attains one-pointedness of mind: this is called the concentration of energy.

He generates desire, makes an effort, arouses energy, applies his mind, and strives for the non-arising of unwholesome, unskillful states that have not yet arisen.

He generates desire, makes an effort, arouses energy, applies his mind, and strives for the abandoning of unwholesome, unskillful states that have arisen.

He generates desire, makes an effort, arouses energy, applies his mind, and strives for the arising of wholesome, skillful states that have not yet arisen.

He generates desire, makes an effort, arouses energy, applies his mind, and strives for the maintenance, non-confusion, increase, growth, development, and fulfillment by development of wholesome, skillful states that have arisen.

These are called the factors of striving.

Thus, this energy, this concentration of energy, and these factors of striving:

He generates desire, makes an effort, arouses energy, applies his mind, and strives for the arising of wholesome, skillful states that have not yet arisen.

He generates desire, makes an effort, arouses energy, applies his mind, and strives for the maintenance, non-confusion, increase, growth, development, and fulfillment by development of wholesome, skillful states that have arisen.

These are called the factors of striving.

Thus, this investigation, this concentration of investigation, and these factors of striving: this is called the basis of spiritual power endowed with the concentration of investigation and the factors of striving.
