SN56.18 — Vijjāsutta

Then a certain disciple approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. While sitting to one side, that disciple said to the Blessed One:

Knowledge, knowing, it is said, venerable sir.

What, venerable sir, is knowing;

and to what extent is one endowed with knowing?

Disciple, the knowing of suffering, the knowing of the origin of suffering, the knowing of the cessation of suffering, the knowing of the path leading to the cessation of suffering:

this is called knowing, disciple;

and to this extent one is endowed with knowing.

Therefore, disciple, This is suffering should be understood … This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering should be understood.
