SN56.29 — The Discourse on What Should Be Fully Understood
Disciples, there are these four noble truths.
What four?
The noble truth of suffering, the noble truth of the origin of suffering, the noble truth of the cessation of suffering, the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering:
these are the four noble truths.
Of these four noble truths, there is a noble truth that should be fully understood, a noble truth that should be abandoned, a noble truth that should be realized, a noble truth that should be developed.
And what is the noble truth that should be fully understood?
The noble truth of suffering should be fully understood; the noble truth of the origin of suffering should be abandoned; the noble truth of the cessation of suffering should be realized; the noble truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering should be developed.
Therefore This is suffering is a task to be done … This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering is a task to be done.
