Thus have I heard. At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Sīsapā forest near Kosambi. Then the Blessed One took a few sīsapā leaves in his hand and addressed the disciples: What do you think which is more numerous, the few sīsapā leaves in my hand or those in the forest above?

Venerable Sir, the few sīsapā leaves in the Blessed One's hand are very few, while those in the forest above are far more numerous.

Just so what I have directly known but not taught is far more. And why have I not taught it? Because it is not connected with the goal, does not lead to the holy life, to disenchantment, to dispassion, to cessation, to peace, to direct knowing, to enlightenment, to Nibbāna. Therefore, I have not taught it.

And what have I taught? This is suffering I have taught. This is the origin of suffering, I have taught. This is the cessation of suffering, I have taught. This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering, I have taught. And why have I taught this? Because it is connected with the goal, leads to the holy life, to disenchantment, to dispassion, to cessation, to peace, to direct knowing, to enlightenment, to Nibbāna. Therefore, I have taught it.

Therefore This is suffering is to be understood... This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering is to be developed.
