SN6.15 — Parinibbāna Sutta

At one time, the Blessed One was dwelling at Kusinara, in the grove of the Mallas, between the twin sal trees, at the time of his final passing away. Then the Blessed One addressed the disciples: Now I address you: All conditioned things are subject to decay. Strive on with diligence. These were the last words of the Tathagata.

Then the Blessed One entered the first jhāna. Emerging from the first jhāna, he entered the second jhāna. Emerging from the second jhāna, he entered the third jhāna. Emerging from the third jhāna, he entered the fourth jhāna. Emerging from the fourth jhāna, he entered the realm of infinite space. Emerging from the realm of infinite space, he entered the realm of infinite consciousness. Emerging from the realm of infinite consciousness, he entered the realm of nothingness. Emerging from the realm of nothingness, he entered the realm of neither-perception-nor-non-perception. Emerging from the realm of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, he entered the cessation of perception and feeling.

Emerging from the cessation of perception and feeling, he entered the realm of neither-perception-nor-non-perception. Emerging from the realm of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, he entered the realm of nothingness. Emerging from the realm of nothingness, he entered the realm of infinite consciousness. Emerging from the realm of infinite consciousness, he entered the realm of infinite space. Emerging from the realm of infinite space, he entered the fourth jhāna. Emerging from the fourth jhāna, he entered the third jhāna. Emerging from the third jhāna, he entered the second jhāna. Emerging from the second jhāna, he entered the first jhāna. Emerging from the first jhāna, he entered the second jhāna. Emerging from the second jhāna, he entered the third jhāna. Emerging from the third jhāna, he entered the fourth jhāna. Emerging from the fourth jhāna, immediately, the Blessed One attained final Nibbana.

Upon the Blessed One's final passing, at the moment of his final Nibbana, Brahma Sahampati uttered this verse: All beings will lay down their burden, those in the world with form; where such a teacher as this has passed, unmatched in the world; the Tathagata, endowed with strength, the Fully Awakened One, has attained final Nibbana.

Upon the Blessed One's final passing, at the moment of his final Nibbana, Sakka, the lord of the devas, uttered this verse: Impermanent indeed are all conditioned things, of a nature to arise and pass away; having arisen, they cease; their calming is bliss.

Upon the Blessed One's final passing, at the moment of his final Nibbana, the Venerable Ananda uttered this verse: There was a great fear, there was a great trembling; when the Fully Awakened One, of supreme form, attained final Nibbana.

Upon the passing of the Blessed One, along with his final liberation, the venerable Anuruddha spoke these verses:

There is no inhalation or exhalation,

For one whose mind is steadfast and such;

Unshaken, having attained peace,

The one with vision has attained final liberation.

With an untroubled mind,

He endured sensation;

Like the extinguishing of a lamp,

There was liberation of the mind.
